NEURO
LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING
WHAT
IS NLP OR NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING?
NLP
WHAT IS THAT? It is called Neuro Linguistic Programming.
Neuro refers to the brain and how it can be used to a better
advantage. Linguistic is the way one uses language to communicate
better to enrich ones experiences of life more effectively.
Programming, is programming using various techniques and
processes to assist one to react positively in any given
situation. Another way of describing NLP is to ask yourself
how much you know about what's going on inside of you and
others? Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is about just
that.
Knowing what is going on inside you and what's going on
inside others! You may have thought, "How can I communicate
better or how can I control my brain to assist me in being
a better communicator and being better at doing whatever
I want to do?" NLP is the answer! It assists us to
understand how we think, how we communicate and how we process
our emotions. It helps us to understand ourselves better,
as well as others.
This then helps us to produce more effective ways to: -
-
Form
better relationships
-
Have
better rapport with people
-
Improve
our future, particularly in the area of our work
-
As
a result this assists us to make more money
-
It
increases our motivation
-
It
increases our energy
-
It
assists us to be the person we want to be
-
This
in turn improves our image
-
It
assists us to communicate better
It
assist us to get the desired results we want
NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP)
put simply means it is a set of principles, techniques and
attitudes about our behaviour in real life. It permits us
to change, eliminate and adopt certain behaviours we desire,
and also gives us the ability to choose our emotional, mental
and physical states of wellness. We also learn how to grow
and using NLP it gives us the ability to produce the results
we want for a better future.
The
name Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the rather off-putting
name for the study of what works in human psychology and communication.
It's an attitude of curiosity about how we think, feel and
behave which has left a trail of many and varied effective
techniques for enhancing the human ability, including resolving
many problems in therapy and business.
NLP
is a fairly recent development originating at the University
of Santa Cruz in the mid-seventies when a group of talented
people came together to share information and insights across
disciplinary boundaries. It incorporates insights from behavioural
and Gestalt psychology, family therapy, hypnotherapy, linguistics,
information theory among many other disciplines.
Unlike
other schools of psychotherapeutic thought, which concentrate
on how problems arise, NLP started from studying people who
are exceptionally good at what they do and finding how they
do it so that anyone can get similar results by doing the
same things. It aims to move beyond remedial change fixing
specific problems) to 'generative' change which empowers you
to achieve more in your life. Often people find that when
they learn a new skill or make a breakthrough in one area
of their life, problems in other areas seem to disappear or
seem less important.
One of the things that often surprises people about NLP is
the speed with which many problems can be resolved. My experience
as a therapist has taught me that solving one's problems is
all about learning- at the unconscious level, which is where
it counts, and learning can happen very quickly. At the emotional
level there is no time-you either have an emotion or you don't!
To
be successful I feel you only need to remember three things!
Know
what you want, have a clear idea of your desired outcome in
any situation.
Be alert and keep your senses open so that you notice what
you are getting.
Have the flexibility to go on changing what you do until you
get what you want.
If you go on doing what you have always done, you'll always
get what you always got!
NEURO refers to your neurological
system, the way you use your senses of sight, hearing, touch,
taste and smell to translate your experience into thought
processes, both conscious and unconscious. It relates to your
physiology as well as your mind and how these function as
one system. Much of NLP is about increasing awareness of your
neurological system and learning to manage it.
LINGUISTIC refers to the
way you use language to make sense of your experience and
how you communicate that experience to yourself and others.
Your language patterns are an expression of what you are and
how you think.
PROGRAMMING
is the coding of experience. A program is a series of steps
designed to achieve a specific result. The results you achieve
and the effects you create in yourself and others are the
consequence of your personal programs. There is a sequence
of behaviour and thinking patterns that results in your experience.
Through awareness of these sequences you can code the structure
of your own and other people's experiences.
NLP is a way of thinking and behaving. It can become a code
of conduct. I have no doubt that NLP applied with elegance
and respect can enhance the quality of everything you do.
NLP is based on the premise that you already have within you
all the resources that you will ever need and it therefore
concentrates on drawing out these capabilities and skills.
PRESSUPOSITIONS OF NLP OR BELIEFS
OF EXCELLENCE
Respect
for the other person's model of the world
Each person is unique or "The map is not the Territory."
Everyone
makes the best choice available to them at the time
There
is no failure, only feedback
Behind
every behaviour there is a positive intention
Mind
and body are part of the same system (The mind and body affect
each other)
There
is a solution to every problem
The
person with the most flexibility in thinking and behaviour
has the best chance of succeeding
Knowledge,
thought, memory and imagination are the result of sequences
and combinations of ways of filtering and storing information
People
have all the ability they need to succeed. (There are no unresourceful
people, only unresourceful states)
If you pre-suppose these to be true you will begin to take
on the ways and thinking and behaviour that are characteristic
of the models of excellence.
Have
you ever wondered how some people achieved the successes they
did?
For example:
How Christopher Columbus held onto his vision of discovering
a new route around the world and maintained the courage and
tenacity to cross waters no one had sailed before?
How the Americans managed to break through the limits of what
seemed impossible, to land a man on the moon?
Many people would have given up after a fraction of the journey.
So what made these and so many more achievements possible?
These people succeeded because they believed they could. Once
Roger Bannister had run a mile in under 4 minutes, many other
athletes did the same. Once he had broken the barrier, others
knew it was possible.
These
are a couple of sayings I often refer to in my work as a Clinical
Hypnotherapist:
Whatever
the mind believes it can achieve!
Doubt creates fear and often mental paralysis
Both I feel are so true. Another NLP saying or learning which
I strongly believe in is:
We all have the recourses within us to overcome any problem.
That's right - I believe we do!
However, often we are unable to join up those recourses and
that is:-
