HYPNOSIS
what is it?
HYPNOSIS today is becoming so very popular
all over the World as an alternative method for various
problems, ranging from smoking, weight loss, depression
and in some cases success has been claimed with cancer.
Today people are more conscious of what they put in their
bodies, such as the side effects of various medications
etc. They are looking for alternatives, and hypnosis may
be a very good choice!
There is really nothing strange about hypnosis. It is a
state of mind, which occurs quite naturally in each and
every person at some time or another. You see we all experience
hypnosis to some degree every single day of our life. Each
time we become totally absorbed in our favourite book, movie,
video or even just daydreaming or in many other situations.
At the time you may not have realised it, because unconsciously
you have entered a state of hypnosis during which time other
happenings around you are not competing for your attention
and you become absorbed in the thoughts and happenings of
what you are concentrating on at that time. You may even
be completely oblivious to what is going on around you.
Hypnosis is believed to have begun with the work of Franz
Anton Mesmer, sometime in or around the 18th. Century. Mesmer
was a Physician by occupation. His work took place during
a time when many were superstitious about what he was doing
and some even looked on it as a form of witchcraft, however
Mesmer called it a form of animal magnetism.
In the 1800's a Scottish Physician by the name of John Braid
laughed at the idea of Mesmer's work being associated with
witchcraft and said he felt that it was a state of special
sleep and relaxation and he came up with the term hypnosis
after the Greek God 'Hypnos'.
Now we have come to realise that hypnosis is not a state
of sleep but a state of relaxation varying from light to
deep. Tests have shown that a person is neither unconscious,
nor asleep. In fact tests have shown that a person in deep
hypnosis is in a state of deep relaxation and engaged in
normal mental activity.
Hypnotism became known during World War 11 when many Psychotherapists
used hypnosis in an attempt to find an effective way of
dealing with "battle fatigue" and "war neuroses".
Its use was so successful that hypnosis soon became widely
accepted by the medical profession and on the 23rd of April
1955, hypnosis was officially recognised by the British
Medical Association as a valid and important method of treatment.
In September 1958, just over three years later, the American
Medical Association also approved hypnosis in medicine.
This I am led to believe was based on the results and findings
of a long and intensive Committee study on the subject,
which involved the interviewing and assessing the results
and outcomes of treatments on various subjects from all
walks of life.
Hypnosis today is usually associated with a state of complete
relaxation and its use in a Clinical environment for various
problems often brings outstanding and amazing results. The
state of relaxation is often one, which we can all learn
with practise. In the relaxed state our mind can be free
to accept positive thoughts and suggestions much more easily,
enabling us to change our negative thoughts into positive
ones, and giving us strong positive attitudes about ourselves,
our health and our every day lives.
Hypnosis is a state that each person actually creates within
himself or herself. Each person's experience is unique.
Some people naturally respond more easily than others and
with more intensity. Many will enter hypnosis in a matter
of seconds, where others may take a lot longer. Some resistant
people may have a number of reasons for resisting. This
could be fear based on false expectations. Usually though,
as the person gains more experience and understanding of
hypnosis he/she will soon come to realise that it is just
a deep state of relaxation. One cannot be made to do anything
they do not want to, and when they come to understand this,
hypnosis becomes easier for them and they will soon find
that each successive time they will be able to enter it
more quickly and easily and as a result reap the rewards
of each unique experience.
Many people are still cautious of Hypnosis and prefer to
suffer with various mental and health problems. They would
rather suffer than have Hypnosis, as they feel insecure
and unsure of what may happen. This is sad because in many
cases they could be helped and helped dramatically. More
and more Doctors today are referring their patients to a
qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist because they realise the
benefits to their patients. Wouldn't it be much better to
have Hypnosis to deal with the cause of a problem rather
than have to take medication for the symptoms? In other
words Hypnosis gets to the root cause and once that is dealt
with the symptoms or effects of the problem disappear. (Please
see Mind Body connection link)
I can understand the feelings of people who are cautious
of Hypnosis and understand where they are coming from however
I would like to point out that Hypnosis is only a state
of relaxation and at all times the person is completely
aware of what is happening and is completely free to leave
if they so wished. The person can never be made do anything
that is against their beliefs or morals. Should they under
Hypnosis be instructed or told they were to rob a Bank they
would never do it unless they had an inbuilt desire to do
so!
Unfortunately people often relate Hypnosis to stage Hypnosis
and obviously they get the wrong picture. They see a picture
of people performing on stage doing all sorts of things
that they would never otherwise do. You may wonder why they
perform in such a manner. Well the reason they respond in
such a way as that they have an inbuilt desire or wish to
perform. As simple as that! Clinical Hypnosis does work!
It has helped many hundreds of thousands and fortunately
more and more people are becoming aware of its benefits
every day.
